How to Set a Goal: Steps to Success

Life is all about setting up goals and trying our very best to fulfill them. Goals are your motivation and direction in life. Goals determine where you are going, how you will get there, and what happens when you do get there.

Setting up goals isn’t easy because it takes proper planning to be able to get it done right. You can’t just wake up one day and decide “I want to become rich” and expect achieve that goal. It doesn’t work that way. Instead, I will provide some easy-to-follow steps that will help you on how to set a goal.

Question Yourself

Ask yourself a series of questions to get more information about what you really want to do. Therefore, you will understand more about yourself and will lead to a decision upon a certain goal. Here are some examples of questions that you may ask yourself:

  • What kind of information do I need?
  • What kind of skills do I need to learn or master?
  • How am I able to achieve this?
  • Is there any alternative way or a best way to do this?

Think Small to Achieve Big

Do not start off your goal as something big such as “I want to become rich” or “I want to be successful.” Instead work on something smaller and work your way up. Smaller goals are easier to achieve and take less time to complete. Therefore, there will be a lesser chance of you giving up on the goal after a certain amount of time. Here are some examples of smaller goals that will give you a better understanding when you are setting up goals.  [Read: ]

  • Instead of “I want to become a professional basketball player” perhaps “I will train and work out this summer and attend basketball camps”
  • Instead of “I want to become rich” perhaps “I will save a certain amount of money to begin an investment”

Avoid Procrastination

Perhaps the biggest set back in setting up goals and getting it done is procrastination. To be successful, you must find a way to avoid procrastinating. A way to do this is to set up a schedule on how you will work on that goal and at the same time keep you motivated to continue.
